My flatmate from Finland moved out the other day he left me these....

I have tasted the Blue and White one it's some sort of Menthol Vodka (quite nice) but I'm kinda afraid of the other one (Terva Snapsi, Mausteena Aito Terva) it smells very strong and I'm not exactly sure what it smells of, I'm think it's some sort of Schnapps ?? Can anyone enlighten me ??? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Terva is tar, so it's tar flavoured vodka.

I've never seen either of the bottles, and I visit the off-licence regularily (mainly the wine section, mind you).

Oh, the tar thingie is not that strong, only 21 %

Thank You :o)

It smells awful, I might wait till I'm really pissed one night before attempting it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tar

Finland used to be a major manufacturer of tar, it was used on boats (still is) and tar flavoured sweets are quite popular, especially mixed with liquorice.

I'm not a big fan, personally, but obviously there are a lot of people who are.

Btw, I think the other bottle could be Danish.

It might be prudent to consider the fact that the bottles were left for you, opened, but not finished… A true alcohol-fanatic Finn would've finished them, so obviously he didn't like them. Might be wise to consign them to the deep.

Tar is edible? Really? If I thought someone had ingested tar, I'd probably be on the phone with Poison Control immediately. And you know I hate to use the phone.

This is the problem with Finns, we tend to use things rest of the world consider poisonous. There's the tar, which has been a traditional method of protecting wooden boats, EU doesn't agree with it. Popular flavour to booze and sweets. Another one is the nation's favourite sweet, salmiac (salty liquorice). Ammonium chloride is deadly in big quantities.
