Why? God...They say America is like a door-opener..I mean. You've got so many great cities in just 1 country...and it's (mostly modern...)

I dunno hehee. My parents made the decision. I didn't want to go away from Peru, but I was 10 when they decided it and I couldn't do anything. Barcelona is a great city and I love it but I always miss my dear Lima.

I'm from a small town in the west of Germany, the next bigger cities are Aachen (this is where I study) or Cologne. I really like it here, although it's sometimes annoying that I live in this small town and not in Aachen (but I hope I can move there next year :). There's a lot of nature around here, you're close to the Netherlands and Belgium (10 minutes ;) and the people are really friendly and open-minded. I don't want to stay here forever but I think I could never move far away for a long time.. After all, my heart is here in the Rheinland ;)

This is a really interesting thread, seeing how many people from so many different countries are in the board :)

That makes sense. But do you think you'd get tired of living in the same place after 4 or 5 years?

I think at the end of this next 13 years I will be very ready to settle and if i get wunderlust I shall travel the world on wonderful holidays!

Spid - that's amazing and also kinda shocking...do feel like home...anywhere? Maybe now :) ? ....

no, nowhere feels like home, and it makes it difficult to decide where to settle when we finally do. I've always said the houses we live in (rented from the RAF) are houses not homes as we are never there long enough and not allowed to do anything to them. At least i will be able to say I've seen a fair bit of our country as we try to holiday here a lot to and go to different counties than we have lived in.

I'd love an old small(ish) cottage with loads of old world charm and character (no horse brasses though)on a reasonable plot of land where i can live out my dotage with my cats, dogs and chickens! That's the dream anyway.

My story is quite boring. I live in a mainly residential suburb of Detroit, which is absolutely nothing like Detroit. It's basically a big neighborhood. I've lived in the same house all my life (my parents moved away from me, rather than the opposite) with the exception of a few years in college when I lived a whole 8 miles away. How's that for life on the edge?

I speak only one language; however, I can fake a fairly decent southern accent since I spent all my childhood summers in Kentucky.

PS: Lilly, you really need to see this sketch if you don't already know it. It's about Bavaria but extremely silly!

EDIT: link should be correct now...

:D yeah I know the Monty Python sketch, love it (though the ending is a tiiiny bit too much for my nerves ;D)

Nell, I know Ottobrunn, - have never been to Allach, though, just know it from the Subway-map ;D

Mili: Helsinki and Munich have things in common? Really? this friend of mine who lived in HEL for a year looooves your city and hates Munich (she was born next to Freising, but I think she doesn't really know Munich, just doesn't like the sound of it or something ;) )

You got that right. Gotta remember the bit about the stew :o)

I guess having a specific cultural background just isn't as exciting when you still live in that area. I think you become much more aware of your cultural background if you live in a completely different place.

I think everybody loves their country of origin more when abroad. I'm much keener on Finland when away and my husband's still very English after umpteen years here, perhaps even more so because he's not in the UK. anymore

Yes, I've had both Helsinki moments in Munich (at the ring road and somewhere near Isartor, you know the gay area somewhere there, can't remember the address, something about the buildings there) and Munich moments in Helsinki. Both cities have water and oldish buildings, but honestly I think Munich is way cooler.

About the sketch, it's pretty close to the kind of humour that makes me to walk around the flat (like Fawlty Towers).

About languages, I speak Finnish and English, some German, French and Swedish, can understand a bit of Italian (especially on the wine bottle lable…).

I'm from Oslo, Norway. Not really an interesting story here, but I'm born here in Oslo, moved to a small village called Heggedal when I was 9 months old (the flat got too small and my parents wanted more children so we moved to a more rural place), moved back to Oslo in 2005 to study, and I think I'm going to stay here for a while :)

well, my life is a quite boring... I was born in Mexico City and I only moved 3 times in my life... I've live in the same house for 21 years, except the time when I lived in Ireland -Co. Galway- for 1 month and half... and 5 months in London...

I loved London a lot, but I love Mexico City too.. 20 million people here, chaotic traffic, chaotic life, everybody on rush, a lot of people in the underground all the time trying to enter at the same time like you, mmm... thats why I love my hometown... paceful, nice enviroment, friendly people.... there's no place like home!!!
