The put-the-letter-on-the-desk tenchique seems kinda random to me. Especially if the boss has no idea that you are thinking of leaving, then this doesnt seem like the best approach.
Maybe it depends on the environment you are in though. I guess if it is a big place with less interaction between everyone, it makes more sense, but im in a small office and that would seem really out of place here.
Yeah, I'm in a small laboratory/office and her desk is practically opposite mine. I don't think she has any idea that I'm thinking of leaving! Don't think she'll be best pleased cos they're already really short-staffed and are having trouble recruiting. EEk!!
Don't want to sound too blunt but maybe she doesn't give a shit about you and your work.
Tell her you're outta there ASAP. |

No, I think you're quite right, she doesn't give a shit about me and my work but she will be pissed off that this will create more work for her and generally lower the morale of the place even more! |

I just read the dream thread, so the palace thing makes more sense now!
Good luck tomorrow! Let us know how it goes.
Maybe bring the boss some banana bread! Not that she deserves it, but it will put her in a good mood |

Good luck! Just take a deep breath and get it over with. It's your right to give notice, after all! |

My, we learn something every day here. Yeah, in the US, we leave the note on the desk so the boss can read it, then he/she calls you in to talk.
So, if you hand her a letter, what do you do while she reads it? Stand there? Or do you explain yourself, then just give her the letter because they just need something official in writing?
We need a new "quitting your job around the world" thread. |

Not if that's a two week notice. Things could be a little uncomfortable for the next 9 business days. |

I asked my husband how he quits. He said he always goes in and quits in person and then hands them his official letter. It would never even occur to me to do that. Maybe I'm in the minority on taking the coward's way out. |

That's how I did it with every job I quit (the only exception being when I quit when I had Aidan) and most people I know did it that way. I guess it might be cowardly but I always saw it to let the boss digest the news before you talk about it. |

Here you don't even have to write a letter, it's usually enough to do it face to face, talking (which can bee nasty if the boss is scary). At least I've never written a resignation letter to a job (and I've quitted a few). Unless you count in resigning from the board of a housing assosiation. |
