We have a similar situation here in Finland. The tax on alcohol was lowered a coupe of years ago to battle floods of cheap booze from Estonia. The end result is that people drink even more than before (and still import some of their drink). The tax was rised first of January, and there is talk about even higher taxes since it didn't have any effect.

Finns traditionally drink a bottle of vodka on Friday/Saturday and then maybe stab a friend – we don't go out looking for fights and attacking strangers. There was a campaign to import more "European" drinking style, i.e. a bit of wine with meals, but the end result was a combination culture; a little bit (or a bit more) of wine all week AND the bottle of vodka at the weekend... The end result is disasterious for general health etc.

I found this about the program:

Stab a friend instead of a stranger. What a concept.

We have the same problem in Denmark. The taxes were also lowered here in order to stop people from buying all the alcohol in Germany. However, people are still buying beer by the pallet just across the border, while people living further away just able to drink more. Stupid, in my opinion.

Typical manslaughter in Finland occurs when a group of men are drinking, then vodka gets on the low side and there's an argument over the rest. Somebody gets a knife out, and police is needed. Brutal, but I prefer it to gang attacks on total strangers, if you have to choose, that is.

So you think it's better if you attack someone who is even more innocent? I think that people should stop bringing knives to parties. Or other weapons, for that matter. If you don't have a knife within reach, you won't stab anyone.

Ah. now there's an initiative I can get behind.

I can't stand the UK drinking culture. While I'll admit to being party to it as a student, back when I thought it was hilarious. I now can't stand it. I'd much more prefer a cafe culture Euro friendly way of relaxing with some wine over a meal. I was in Lyon & Nice over the summer last year and it was so relaxed. No yobs, no louts, no sick, no police, no crowds, no violence, no fighting all from over indulgence in drink.

Can't see any way of combatting it. It appears to be engrained in our culture, for better or for worse.

Yes, that's what I observed/mentionned and yes it's much nicer although like you I also had a great time going out for drinks in London when I lived there, but god never to THAT point. When I talked to foreign friends about the drinking in the UK I often mention the "vomit competition" in the street...and that's sad.

I don't like knifes used on people at all, but the point I'm making is that at least the streets here are relatively safe, and if you choose your company well, so should your home be, too. Surely a total stranger could be considered more innocent than an arguing mate? Neither deserves to be attacked, though.

You're right. Innocent people have been attacked a couple of times in Copenhagen (ie stabbed to death), which doesn't exactly make this place feel safer.

I've often wondered why Celtic were considered the more "Irish" team when the ancient roman name for Ireland is Hibernia?
