For me it's more about social situations and etiquette as opposed to gender. i.e. formal occasions, no swearing. First dates no swearing. Chilling with the parents/older relatives no swearing. Whereas hanging out with my pals or sisters - swear at an appropriate level, compared to how much the other people around me use foul language! I don't mind swearing, as long as it's done properly (e.g. my younger sister is great at insults. She has many cracking turns of phrases including "shit whore" among others)
It's more a matter of occasion than a matter of gender for me as well. I swear occasionally but it depends on the situation and on who I'm with.
Quote: I find my work quite funny. I work as an Engineer, for an Oil & Gas firm, which was traditionally quite a male-centric industry. So there's quite a few dinosaurs of guys from the old days, who are basically used to working in a big boys club. It's amazing the colorful language they use. I swear, there's one guy here who uses "Fuck" as a noun, verb, adjective, etc in every conversation. Typical conversation I had this morning:
"We need to fucking sort these fucking lights out. It's not fucking right. Some fucking fuck has fucking installed them all fucking wrong, with the wrong fucking type of fucking fitting".
Seriously impressive swearage!
It reminded me of this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SlPv263acA&feature=related
I'm going to use this in my linguistics lecture. (Linguistics can be fun sometimes! ;) ) |

I swear more when I write...I swear in real life, but I tend not to do it front of my 'elders' (parents, grandparents etc...)
If you swear all the time it gets boring, male or female.
I think from now on whenever I want to swear I will instead say "Curses!" and twirl my invisible mustasche.

Same here. I use it in moderation and I don't swear around my grandparents and try to watch my words around my parents. It's different with friends or my bro, but I was never really one to swear like a sailor anyway, lol. But Polish swear words are fun to say! Right Megg? I think Dupa, Krowa and Swinia and my personal favorites. :P |

My teacher (and now thesis supervisor & friend) used it in his lectures. It made the lecture more lively and I remember that it got some students interested in linguistics. Now he wants me to take over his lectures, so I guess I'll be using it too! |

Good point Nikki, swearing for effect in a foreign language is brilliant! Merde!
Has anyone ever seen the Father Ted episode where they go to the picnic ground where no swearing is allowed? I sometimes slip into that since the substitute words they use not to swear are genius.
"Fup off grasshole, you fuppin baxterd! You're a fuppin pedrophile!" |

I wasn't really a swearer until I started driving and it was totally called for in most situations (you drivers out there will know what I mean!). I thought I was bad at swearing until I started my new job, the girl I work with has a mouth on her, every other word is b**tard, cock, c*nt (I hate that bloody word!), and because I work with her all day everyday I've begun to swear like her!!! |

It REALLY bothers me when people use c*nt. A former co-worker said it a lot. She was just this nasty old chain smoking woman with yellow teeth. She said it once in conversation with me AT WORK and I was really taken back like "did you just say what I think you said?" Old witch. lol. |

I guess everyone has their seperate non verbal acceptance of what the existing company will and wont accept and I accept that but I HATE hearing F when I am out and in earshot of continual F for no purpose other than to forge a communication bonding and to impress and I think that anyone that uses F continualy as described earlier has a problem. A deeper insight reveals a denominator of personal problems and also poor education, interestingly something that can be changed. Take Gordon Ramsey. He is making money out of it! |

I did quite well in my GCSE English and don't have any major personal issues, but use the word fuck quite often. Do I therefore have a problem? |

I don't know...I guess I just find it repulsive and degrading to women. I think I remember you saying you use it Grinner...maybe you say it in a way that's not so offensive? To me it's all about who is saying it, the way they're saying it and where they're saying it, ya know? |

See I personally don't really know how it is degrading to women, as women have them... hahaha I think I might be missing a point somewhere if anyone would like to provide me with a better understanding. |

Hmm, well I just don't really 'get' swearing. At least, not when people can't make a sentence without saying "fucking" every other word. But it often feels like I'm in the minority, lol. Tsk...Fucking swear words... |
