Statistically, the risk of long-term effects is much greater if you actually get these diseases than if you opt for the vaccine. But you can just never be sure that nothing will happen.
I had my mmr vaccine and I'm fine *knock on wood*, but I also know about a kid (or a man now) who got a permanent brain damage. |

I never had it due to a member of my family having a form of autism (possibly due to a dodgy vaccine), and have had mumps, measles and t'other one i can never remember the name of. They're awful, but much better than having your life totally changed by autism ... which i have a form of, but it could have been worse if i had been given the MMR ... who knows ...

yeah i wasnt diagnosed myself till i was 10 years old just before leaving primary school
I know there is still time for something to come up. In no way do I mean that we are all clear as my son is still so young. When you are a parent you have alot to think about and options to weigh, I feel I made the right decision and am not going to live in fear that my son will be diagnosed. At least he's not going to come up with some possibly fatal disease :)
well i hope your son never has autism its very hard to understand for those who dont know about it, i had terrible problems with teachers at my primary school and my family have been frustrated with lack of support in jobs and social skills like that, luckly im only at the mild end of the scale so it doesnt affect me as much as sum others are affected i feel sorryu for those who are badly affected by it at the top end. luckly im hopeful i can have a normal life.
im hopeful i will have my own children when im older 1 day
Sounds as though you've managed and done very well for yourself. There is far more information out there now than even just a couple of years ago, hopefully people will pay atention and be more understanding.
yes i hope people will be more understanding about it in the future espically wen it comes to jobs, no one should be discrimminated against in the workplace whatsoever regardlesas of any disability they have |

The study in 1998 known as the Wakefield report was fundamentally flawed in the way the experiment was conducted. Unfortunately the doctor who led the study claimed in the press conference that there was a link between MMR and the incidence of autism, despite the research not backing this up.
Of course the media jumped on this and overnight the MMR became totally untrusted, and it's taken a long time to get the message across that all the scientific studies suggest it's perfectly safe to have the combined vaccine.
