float to the top is a good thing. but sometimes it can be a very, very bad thing - e.g. the whole situation with that DaveUrMan person. he's annoying that's true but he's feeding off the attention this annoyance is bringing in (a condition known as "Aztism").
ergo collegues - let the threads die. dead threads force attention to go away, along with, hopefully, the offending Aztistic.
Yours sincerely,

Most people seem quite interested in my thread afterall really, don't they mr potter - i'd love if you joined to discuss scientific matters sometime :)
This whole thread has gone rather arse for elbow really hasn't it, Mr Potter? :) |

Not silly, just me speaking in shorthand: terms and conditions.
It's a bit risky not to have any code of practise to abide by. Not least because of spammers. But also because there needs to be a control in place to remove people who are offensive-not the usual users, but people who don't practise netiquette and respect.
on the old board there where some rules of conduct, don't know where they are now (?) there was once the discussion about having a moderator or controller but as far as I remember Travis specifically didn't want this.
Over all the years I've been here, there was only once somebody got banned for a while. I think that's great :) |

I agree, it's pretty good. Tho, for the record, I can think of 2!!!
It still doesn't harm to have a lurking moderator for our general protection. And for wannabee spammers and trouble makers to know that they can't get away with it!
Anyway, there is a converse problem to letting threads die, and that's too many new ones being started.
Discuss!!!
I'll read your thoughts before putting in my pennyworth... |

I can beat that with 3! :D
I used to be in favour of having a more active moderator, but I think not having strict codes of conduct makes this place more accessible to a wide range of people. I like to think we can handle anyone who steps way out of line without the need to involve the web team, who I'm sure have a ton of other things to do.
*edit* The real problem is the float-to-top system. Without that there wouldn't be a problem with letting threads die.

Doesn't have to be a strict code of conduct- but there needs to be someone who can delete spam and offensive material, send pm's to offending posters (have the power to remove posters if necessary), and just do basic housekeeping. Certainly not a heavy handed, or time consuming role.
And also, there's no reason why a boardie can't be given moderator responsibility. |

Well, we hardly seem to get any spam (or what I would class as spam), and offensive material - quite a number of the more established boardies are offensive in some way or other. *edit* not saying that I find them offensive, but other people have in the past which may or may not be justified.
And the discussions in the past about having a boardie moderator haven't come to any kind of conclusion that the team, or band, would be happy with.

Fair enough for now. Maybe the board has a super dooper spam filter! Most forums get spam at some point or another.
Boardie moderators do work. But as you rightly pointed out, there's no real problem here at the mo. It may be something for the future, if things change and the web team can't support it. |
