It’s Neil’s birthday today. We are going to have a party for him after the shoot. The crew had suggested getting a maid to sing happy birthday when he came out his room and then when he came down to reception, a man in a lion suit would present him with a cake. We didn’t do this.
I left the hotel at 7am. It was colder today. After some eggs on toast on the set, I was driven to where they’d set up their cameras and we shot the opening sequence. What followed was the most boring 5 hours ever. Just me walking back and forward. There were a lot of people watching. MTV Poland were there, and the film crew from the UK, and other folk just milling about, all watching me walking back and forward. It magnified the tedium.
The afternoon was much better. They shot Dougie playing football with a bunch of wee guys (10 year old boys who were pretty good at football). Their outfits were cute. Their faces were old fashioned, like from the 30s in Britain. Lots of character. They loved Uncle Dougie.
Dougie is a veteran uncle. He has 6 nieces and nephews. We shot there for 3 hours and then went back to the base and waited for the call to do the last scenes. The football scene was the last outdoor scene of the shoot. My feet were like blocks of frozen meat so I was glad of this news.
Back at the makeup bus, Neilly and Andy had arrived. We all sung happy birthday to Neil. The penultimate location was in an apartment block again. A different one from the previous night. The lady who’s house it was, had asked the crew and everyone that came past her threshold to put plastic bags on their feet because there was a lot of dogshit in the area.
We sat patiently in the stairwell, awaiting our call. The last shot was of us all, dancing and having a party in this room. Neil and Andy playing and Dougie and I dancing with the twins. Oh and there was a cake attached to the camera! After this the boys departed and the filmcrew set up for the last shot of the shoot, which has me, the stoic cowboy, continuing on his journey, happy at the adventure he’s just been on. We shot it on a tram track, round the back of the apartment block, dodging late night trams.
And that was that. We wrapped at 10.30pm, packed our stuff and went back to the hotel. We all met at a bar round the corner and celebrated Neil's birthday with a super rich chocolate cake and beer. Everyone was pooped.
It’ll be ok though. The stuff I saw looked amazing. The directors Arni and Kinski have a great touch, and our acting in the video is funny. I can’t wait to see it when they do the edit.
