RAK Studio Diary 10

March arrives and, despite all meteorological evidence to the contrary , in my mind it heralds the start of spring. Thus I find myself dressed almost completely inappropriately for the Baltic conditions as I head into the studio. My stripey scarf is my only saviour. Thanks for your kind fashion comments by the way.

After we left the studio last night Neily stayed behind and put some drums on the sad tune. So straight away we pick up where we left off on that one. I add some more bass and do some b.v’s and Franny adds a big, distorted electric which sounds like it shouldn’t work but it does.

Am re-reading Bill Bryson’s “a short history of nearly everything”. I was never enthusiastic about any area of science when I was at school but for some reason I’m now fascinated. Even the most basic stuff leaves me staring into space in a very pleasant state of confusion and amazement. So, everything is made of atoms? Right. And the only solid part of an atom is the nucleus? Ok. And if you increased an atom to the size of St Pauls cathedral the nucleus would be the size of a housefly. WHAT?
So everything is mostly nothing. And the electrons that occupy defined orbits round the nucleus can be everywhere in the orbit at once. It occurs to me as I read, that we really don’t know anything about anything. Or maybe that’s just me.

Andy is late in today as he has baby duties to attend to. Timing works out well though as he arrives just as we finish putting down a mix of the sad song.
We move on to the Beatle-y one. Oh yeah, someone asked which era of Beatles didn’t they? Well I’d say it sounds like a mixture of about 4 things off the white album with a pinch of Revolver. Before we get working we set up the webcam. We’re having to keep it turned off during office hours as, for some reason, it’s slowing down the network in here too much for the office to function. Sorry bout that.
You joined us just as we went in to start tracking .

Funny how after a song has been given a day to settle, the performance becomes much much better. Like your brain has been processing the information without you realising.
By the way, somebody asked who took the photos in the diary, well stand up and pat yourself on the back TWT. They are very good aren’t they?

We run through the tune a few times. A couple of takes break down due to Franny’s itchy nose or a little confusion over what sections go where but over all it’s sounding really good.

On listening back to the tape, the first take after dinner is deemed to be the one to work on. It has a certain charm combined with good playing which is a tricky balance to achieve. Andy has to redo his guitars, as a better sound is required, and adds a couple more for good measure, so while he does that I’ll answer some more questions.

A few of you have been asking what the big yellow thing that looks like a vibrator is. The rather mundane answer is that it’s the talkback button. When your in the control room and want to speak to someone in the live room you press the button on the top and you can miraculously communicate with each other.

Vics I think Daniel Craig will make a great Bond. The roguish charm, the sighly sinister demeanour, the excellent acting ability . How can it go wrong?

Ben Filbert the song with KT turned out really well ,so it looks good for the record but obviously we’ll have to wait until we listen back to everything we’ve done before we’re in a position to say what’s on and what’s not.

Eleanora we have no idea what the album cover’s going to look like yet.

2. You have a good point and I’d say Italian food is the best in the world.

3.I found my stamp out the beatles t shirt recently! It had gone missing for a while so I was quite relieved.

CHILENA we have all been listening to loads of music, watching loads of movies and reading lots of books but it’s always difficult to say what’s been an influence until well after the fact. If something sounds too much like something else we’ll always try and change it.

Anyway back to the matter in hand. We put on a few more guitars, all of which sound good individually but together are a little over the top. It’s 2 in the morning and not the best time to be making qualitative decisions so we decide to quit while we’re ahead and go at it tomorrow.
