RAK Studio Diary 08

Have the cockles of my heart warmed this morning by a London Cabbie of all people! Was running a bit late, so ran down to Finchley road and jumped in a cab. The driver then proceeded to give me a CD that I had left in the back seat the last time I was in his cab. Which was last December! He had kept it in the glove compartment for nearly three months. Found myself quite touched by this.

When I get into the studio all action seems to surround getting the webcam up and running. Am relieved to find that we hadn’t gone mad yesterday and the tune is sounding really good. We have a few little overdubs to put on it. Vibraphone, tambourine, cymbals and all those things that make a song sparkly round the edges are added.

As these are getting done Franny is struggling manfully with all manner of emails, phone calls and computer jargon trying to get this camera to work. And as you know by now, he is successful. At long last it is alive!

As you could see once the last overdubs were done there was a lot of listening to do. Ian our manager came in and we played him this one and the catchy one. We did a little editing on the riffy tune, just taking a few things out and making it a bit more dynamic.
We did a few rough mixes of both songs, trying different edits here and there. This is a time consuming process and was the point where it must have looked like we were all just sitting around which, in a very real sense, we were.

After dinner, we decided to start working on a new tune. This one will be known as the beatles-y one. We turn the webcam on the live room but reckon it might be a wee bit dark for you guys to see where we all are so we mark out our territories with gaffa tape to give you an idea where we’re at. Hope it works.

The Beatles-y one is a fun tune to play but it will take a bit of work to knock it in to shape. We have a few run-throughs , each less shambolic than the last as we all work out what we’re up to. There are moments in each take where the tune settles and begins to sound like it could be something, but I think it’ll be best if we come to it fresh tomorrow, and anyway it’s already about 2 in the morning.

Ok, a couple of quick questions :

Ursina, we have recorded a couple of my songs, but will need to wait and see which songs work well together to see what ends up on the record.

Rain on the brain
1.If I was a cannibal I don’t think I’d be too picky.

2. Yeah it’s funny sometimes I can’t believe we’re on album 5 but it feels really good, feels like it’s on its’ way to becoming a substantial body of work.

3. Don’t like it on it’s own but nutella is a crucial ingredient to one of Nigel Slater’s delicious chocolate puddings.

4. At the moment I’m waking up around 10ish since we’re in the studio till quite late.

Speaking of which, night night.
