RAK Studio Diary 06

Am woken up early by the neighbours. They have managed to lock themselves out of their flat with their baby still inside. Oops. The poor people are a bit frantic but the emergency locksmith is there in 10 minutes and all is fine.

Get to the studio early with Kell so we can have a cup of tea with Esther and the girls before they head home. Have fun doing silly walk races with Lola. She is unbeatable though.

Sally came in today to put the violin on the catchy tune. She is such a lovely person, really easy company and very amenable to work with. She does 3 different parts and is all done by mid afternoon. The violin parts sound like a strange amalgam of Prince’s “Raspberry Beret” and “Venus in Furs” by the Velvet Underground. Venus in a Furry Beret if you will.

We all get a little distracted by webcam action. It’s quite exciting to see it all up and running on our laptops and we start working out the best places to put it and whatnot until we realise that it only works on the network in the studio and won’t go out to you all. Bollocks.

We leave the t.w.t to work on the gremlins and get back to the riffy tune.
After working on it for a while we decide too try a different approach and just play to get a great drum take which Steve will take into pro tools and make absolutely machine like.
Then we’ll all play our parts over the top of that. It’s a time consuming way of going about it, but seems appropriate for the tune.

I take the opportunity to introduce the guys to the Dave Chappelle Show, one of my current favourite things. I brought the dvds back from NY and it goes down very well.

Anyway while Steve’s busy doing the editing it gives me a chance to answer some questions.

Hey buzzy, am afraid we ‘re not letting any song titles out of the bag just yet, but rest assured you guys will be the first to know.

Ad infinitum, you just got to learn to love those dimples, they’re not going anywhere and people who have them seem to be able to get away with a lot more cheekiness.

Hey get happy, don’t know any good places for Japanese in new york, but some of my favourite restaurants are Balthazar, Pastis, Aquagrill, Mary’s Fish Camp in the city and M Shanghai, Diner and Marlowe and Sons in Brooklyn.

Healypayne, that’s a whole heap of questions.1. One word? Hmmm tricky, at the moment I’d say “adventurous”.2 We don’t know the tracklisiting yet so who can say , it’s a possibility though. 3.No idea on release date yet. 4. I think somewhere between 25 and 30 songs have been recorded, but I’ve lost count. 5. I think album title suggestions are numbering around 50. My favourite has 4 words in it. 6. A bside album will probably see the light of day at some point.

Typing to reach you , new album will not be a double.

Francia Michelle when we do tour this record we’ll do our best to go everywhere and we would love to come back to Mexico.

Pleung, I think you mean why are we recording in London, is that right? If so,we ‘re doing it here because three of us live here and with all these babies arriving no one was keen on being far from home.

Melinda, I am listening to the Calexico and Iron and Wine collaboration, such a gorgeous album, also the Iron and Wine record “endless numbered days” is really lovely. Have got right in to Nick Cave’s Nocturama album from a couple of years ago, I think the song “He Wants You” is one of the most beautiful things I’ve heard. Also I really like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Fireflower, the first live album I heard was the Beatles live at the Hollywood Bowl, so I’d have to say it would be so good to play there.

Jesusaremus, you’ll have to tell us when it comes out. We’re so close to them, it’s impossible for us to say how different each record is.

Hey sara anna, we haven’t been doing any covers yet, too busy trying to get all these tunes done, but there are a few suggestions floating round. It seems the novelty cover a la ‘Baby one more time” has become an industry standard so we’ll have to think of a new approach.

The editing has gone on till 1 in the morning so that’s all for now.
