RAK Studio Diary 02

Wake up refreshed and intrigued to see what those cheeky chaps got up to last night, so head into the studio bright and early (for me).

Steve plays the track and I must say it’s beginning to sound quite impressive. Added to the track since I left last night are what can only be described as a “big” guitar surrounded by a few littler guitars. Hahaha my powers of description astound me. Can you hear it in your minds?

Everybody arrives, Andy is a bit late as he walked out of his house to discover his car was missing. This is a common occurrence in London, but has nothing to do with a burgeoning crime spree. The council take great delight in putting up tiny signs in inaccessible places saying “you can’t park outside your house” and then towing your car away and charging 200 quid to get it out of the pound. Ah the joys.

Coincidentally KT Tunstall, who did some vocals on the last session and Joss Stone who Franny and I interviewed for radio 1 at T in the park last year are working in Rak as well (not working together before the daily record gets the wrong end of the stick) so they both popped in for a chat.

The bulk of today is going to be spent doing a ton of b.v.s on the new song.
Franny, Andy and myself spend quite a while attempting to turn ourselves into an angelic choir. So much so, in fact, our very halos begin to glow. We try loads of harmonies and all possible configurations of our voices, indeed at one point I find myself in the live room on my own harmonising with myself. Eventually we get it all in time, in tune and sounding appropriately choral. Really quite lovely. The song is beginning to sound like a keeper.

After dinner a few wee overdubs are added, like hundreds and thousands on a knickerbocker glory. Andy came up with a lovely little, almost music box, kind of riff that became the song’s intro. We reckon it might be time to move onto another new tune until at around midnight Franny suggests getting a different sound for the bass and re-doing it.By the time we get it sounding big and bouncy it feels like actually re-recording the part is going to be a job for tomorrow morning.

We have a tendency to start off sessions working until about 3 or 4 in the morning, so that by the time week 2 rolls round everybody is a bit done in. This time we are going to try and pace ourselves a bit. I know that sounds weird seeing as we’ve been recording for a year but each session is kind of independent from the last.

Onwards and upwards.
