R.I.P George Best.

Got in late-ish. The big freeze is here and it seemed to take ages to walk in. Perhaps my Beatle boots were an ill advised decision. Pointy pointy boots are an elegant but feet unfriendly proposition.

By the time I arrived Franny had weaved a little magic and yesterday’s track was sounding great. We had good fun playing around with some of the bits and pieces we overdubbed yesterday. Oh yeah, I forgot to say, this one has got stand up bass on it. Now that is a tricky instrument. It’s just too fecking big! Should be a hoot if we end up doing this one live. Having to lug something bigger than me onstage will be so undignified. We got the track up to the point where it just needs a vocal and thought we’d let it rest (see yesterday’s roast chicken technique).

Moved on to the Eno track. Still no breakthrough with this one. We seem to have saved all the difficult ones till the end of this session. We tried some different drums and thought about new sections, but all this is sidestepping the main issue, which is that it needs a vocal melody over the top of the music.

In the pro-tools files for the song we found something that I had forgotten about. It is perhaps the funniest thing I’ve ever heard. Franny and Brian Eno doing improvised vocals (no lyrics), singing at the same time, but not hearing what each other are singing. It starts off quite nicely, but somehow the image of two drunk guys, staggering out of the pub belting out some song that neither of them know, becomes embedded in one’s head. Much hilarity ensues. Brilliant.

We then moved on to another new one of Franny’s. This is a lovely song that he wrote on the piano. So we thought it best for Franny to get his piano done first and then we could add things on top. It’s a peculiar feeling when you’re moving from one song to another without completing them but this way of doing it has worked well for us in the past so here’s hoping.

Message board questions are coming thick and fast so here’s what I remember.

When we tour we are hoping to go everywhere, but I can’t say for sure yet. No point asking me just now, but rest assured when the time comes we will do our damnedest to play shows wherever we are wanted.

If we were just starting out and supporting other bands I reckon the Arcade Fire would be the one.

No animals as yet on this album but it’s not over yet!

We loved doing the busking last time round, so it’s always a possibility if the mood takes us.

No plan for a re- recording of The Fear. You'll just have to make do with the live versions.

Cheers for now.
