Rather a non event of a day today. We spent a long time working on the middle section of the rocky one only to realise, quite late in the day, that with a few minor adjustments the song was much better without it. Harrumph.
Went out for some fresh air and ended up at the Astoria so I bought some tickets for the show on Sunday that Brian Eno and Mick Jones are guesting on. Should be interesting.
Studio spirits were raised when our friend Charlie Pinder came in for a visit. He was the first man to have faith in Travis. When he was the a& r man at Sony music publishing he gave the band a publishing development deal before any record companies had shown any interest. He has been so supportive, but more crucially, so honest to us, and signed so many great acts over the years that we hold his opinion in very high esteem.
We played him the four songs we’ve worked on this last week or so and he was so enthusiastic. It was really encouraging.
We had a rather jolly dinner together and felt buoyed enough to sample a martini. Very good. After dinner we put down a mix of the song and all was right with the world once more.
Rediscovered a great video, The Vines’ “Ride”. In case you don’t know it’s the one with loads of bands playing the same song in the same room at the same time. Such a simple idea, and so well done. Can’t believe nobody had done it before and very glad it exists. Never fails to raise a smile.
Am reading Stephen Fry’s “The Ode Less Travelled” at the moment. Fantastic. Entertaining and educational. All I remember about poetry lessons in school is being unbearably bored until Robert Turbine ( his name really was Turbine), the school mentalist, peed on his desk. But this is actually making all those iambic pentameters and hemistichs quite endearing little fellers.
Also, I can’t remember if I talked about this before but I just read Paul Auster’s new book The Brooklyn Follies last week .He’s a real favourite of mine and this is a cracker. Give it a go if you’re looking for something good to read.
That’s about it for today I’m afraid. We’ll be starting a new song tomorrow so hopefully there’ll be more news. If not I’m thinking of taking up online mime. Not sure how it’ll work yet but I believe the concept to be sound. I’ll be very influenced by those guys in covent garden who paint themselves silver and stand still. Those guys do my head in. I saw one yesterday who was on a bike on a stand! I mean that’s just sitting down! That’s just taking up space in a ludicrous outfit. I can do that quite well myself thank you. Hmmm what to wear tomorrow? Perhaps Madonna’s new look is a good one for me to emulate.
Any suggestions?
P.S. If there is anything you guys want to know. Post a question on the message board and I’ll try and answer it in the diary as long as it’s not classified information of course.
