Franny and Steve continued working on vocals for the Suze song so Andy, Neil and I took the opportunity to work on, what is known as, “the Eno song”. Imaginative working title don’t you think?
The thing about this one is it has a great atmosphere to it and is really exciting to listen to, but harmonically there just isn’t quite enough going on. So we thought we’d try and write another section into it. This is always a bit tricky to do as you become so used to hearing something one way that anything different sounds a little forced. But we spent the afternoon and early evening trying out various things and came up with something that I think could work. We’ll try it full band and see if F. can come up with a good top line.
Had a couple of visitors. Nigel G. came in for a wee listen. He is going to be mixing from the start of December and it’s good to get his opinion on things.
Then Anton Corbijn came in. He had a beautiful framed photo of Joni Mitchell for Franny. It was lovely to see him and he was on great form. He suggested we call the album ‘Perkins”. For those of you outside the U.K. Travis Perkins is a builder’s merchant.
Franny told us that after England beat Argentina the other night they were doing post match interveiews on the pitch and when “Sing’ came over the tannoy in the stadium the interviews had to be suspended because of the noise of 80,000 people singing along. Do we not like that?
After dinner we listened through to the Suze song with complete vocal. Sounds great. Andy put on a little guitar part just to augment what’s going on already. Single? Could be. Very pop. Nigel came up with a few suggestions. We have quite a good creative relationship with him which can be summed up as “we do the pop and he drags it left”.
Our dear friend Ced (of Remy Zero fame) came in again. He has been in town for a couple of days but is flying back to the U.S. tomorrow so we had a farewell drink with him. He showed us pictures of his beautiful baby boy Noah. What with all these songs and babies round here the fecundity is quite astounding.
Today’s listening included new band Field Music, old band U2 and strange band Neutral Milk Hotel. Field Music were pretty good, very melodic, Neutral Milk Hotel are going to require further investigation before I can come up with any opinion whatsoever.
Random rants: I believe all advertising that pertains to Christmas should be made illegal at least until we’re in December. And also when did it become ok to make TV adverts three times louder than the programme you chose to watch? And I thought we’d got rid of that crazy frog and why can you only get widescreen tellys and another thing……..hahahaha.
