The Hospital Studio Diary 03

Franny picked me up about half 11. Another late one last night so this seemed just about right. Things were slow starting. Technical hitches a go-go when we got into the studio. Hard drives packing up, crackles all over 2 channels, mystery hisses coming from nowhere.

Steve as ever came to the rescue. But this meant a couple of hours of thumb twiddling for us while he was knob twiddling… now now, settle down at the back.

Franny contented himself with photoshop. Creating a beautiful portrait of our manager called “I’ll bet you look good on a hamster”.

I took the opportunity to get my new black I-pod up and running. Crikey it’s a seductive object. In moments like these I’m not sure if technology is our saviour or our potential downfall.

I used to be kind of heartened by the notion that whatever seems cutting edge and frighteningly advanced will seem like a wax cylinder in about 20 years time. However it’s all got so quick now that it feels like we’re rushing headlong over a cliff. On the other hand I don’t want to sound like a stuffy old wanker do I?

Steve managed to get everything up and running and Franny did a few vocals to pick and choose from. Nige (Nigel Godrich) popped in for a listen.

When the vocals are getting done you begin to understand what Charlie Watts meant when, on being asked what 25 years in the Rolling Stones had been like, he said “5 years working, 20 years sitting around”. But as long as things are getting done we’re all happy.

Franny did a whole load of vocal takes over the course of the afternoon and evening while me and Andy made ludicrous music on our laptops. I believe you would call it a “laptop jam” if such a thing wasn’t to hideous to contemplate.

Steve and Franny went through all the vocals. F is singing great and the song really suits his voice. We’re thinking it would sound good with female backing vocals (Suze did some lovely ones on her demo). We would really like a certain person to do it, but i am not going to say anything in case I jinx it.

After dinner things kind of ground to a halt. F was suddenly totally exhausted and we decided to call it a night early. Sometimes you get those days that never really get going if you know what I mean. I hope to bring you more thrilling news tomorrow. If nothing happens I’ll make it up.
