It's the end of a long day. I'm sitting here typing and munching on some tinned pears. Interesting language fact. The german word for light bulb is Glühbirne which means Glowpear. It's my favourite German word.
So...
We finished 2 songs today. The Dougie penned "Moving" and the Andy penned "Big Screen.
Both were whacked out of the park. We are playing so well. My voice is at a really cool place. Nice tone. I been taking saunas in Berlin of and steam room too and it has had a positive effect.
The vocal in moving is the hardest I ever had to sing... apart from Turn of course. The verse is a piece of piss but the chorus is so high, as Billy Connolly would say, " you couldn't fit a credit card between the cheeks of your arse"
I tried singing it in July but it was a strain so last night I sung it in falsetto but today as the track was built upon more, the falsetto just didn't lift off and it really wanted to take off so I tried to give it a go balls to the wall hell for leather. The chorus was so impossible. I did about 6 takes and then my throat was getting worn out and tight so I stopped. Then I thought an adrenalin shot from going for a swim in the FREEZE SEA might loosen my throat up enough to allow me reach the notes. So I got the trunks on and me, Dougie and Andy wandered down to the beach . I put a thermometer on a fishing line earlier to check water temperature. 8 Degrees.
The plan was to run in, swim for a minute, get out and then run up to the studio and immediately do the vocal in the room. The water was insanely cold. The worst part is puting your whole head under. The body polarises the sensation from freezing to hot. I must have lasted 30 seconds. Then I ran up to the room in my trunks and stood dripping, out of breath at the mic so I had to stand for afew seconds to catch it.
Then I sung and it was pretty cool becasue suddenly I could reach the notes. The little barrier was gone. Success. Any singers out there who need to hit a note just out of their range... Fill the bath with ice and cold water and get in there!
The second song we recorded is called Big Screen. Me, Andy and Dougie tracked together. The second take sounded like records so we kept it and will sleep on it tonight the decision as to whether we should add to it. I'm thinking no.
Anyways I am totally knackered... here is a cover we recorded at the end of the night on my iPhone..
