Polish Galareta (gah-lah-REH-tah): Clear, tasteless gelatin encasing meat or fish. You usually eat it with bread and vinigar. It sounds disgusting...who would want to eat meat jello? lol! But I actually like it. :) There's something similar you can get in slices like lunch meat to put on sandwiches called head cheese or Salceson in Polish. Mmmmm. Yum!

There is a lot of weird food in Polish cuisine. Eww, I hate salceson, Nikki! But galareta is yummy! Especially with chicken. |

That's not PROPER fruitcake - that looks like it has so many e-numbers in it it could stand up and walk away. Fruit cake is dark and moist and someone has spent a long time 'feeding' it (normally booze) through the weeks before it is finally eaten. |

The norwegian rakfisk.
It's what I like to call rotten trout. The fish has been lying in a bucket and is fermented for months. As my dads boss once put it (when he was trying to explain to a japanese how it is prepared, but forgot some of his english): You take the fish and put it in the butt! (The word for bucket in norwegian sort of resemble the word butt, bøtte)
It smells like it's been in someones butt for ages haha. And if you eat badly prepared rakfisk you can actually die from botulism. Risky food I say. |
