I called flip-flops thongs, too. The change started when thong underwear started becoming popular. We can't have confusion.
Also, my mom always called wedge heeled shoes, "wedgies." I kept telling her that wedgie means something else nowadays. It took YEARS for her to stop calling wedges "wedgies."
I do have to say that reading a lot of British books when I was a kid introduced me to many different words at an early age. By age 10 I knew that brownies were fairies, and I knew about Wellies, Macs, biscuits, and the underground and all that stuff. Paddington Bear is very educational! |

we have girl guides. I was never one. The little ones were indeed Brownies. There might be a level below that....sparks? I dont know, i played hockey.
My officemate said something about a ladybug today and i went "i learned this weekend that they are called ladybirds in the UK!"
and she though a lot of books from her youth suddenly made more sense. And then that turned into a conversation about the Beatles. Because ladybugs are beetles. And lady beetles would be the wives of the Beatles. |
