They speak about gigs and one girl asks him:

- Why don't you play Safe live?

And he answers something like:

- Well why don't we play Safe live...Actually it's not one of our favourite songs...It's a pretty old song, from 1993 I think, but the record company heard it and wanted us to put it on the record.(Kind of)

Hehe I heard "1893", but it must be 1993 then! It's still pretty early for a TIB-song, but it seems like Fran has written a lot of his songs before Good Feeling/The Man Who, so there must have been a lot of leftovers to choose from ;)

While I'm at it! Which songs released on other albums are written during the Good Feeling-era?

As You Are?
Writing To Reach You?
Turn?
She's So Strange?
Safe?
Flowers In The Window?

Any more?

@Alex: sorry..no idea...but good question..it's worth starting a thread or kind of an archive - or at this site where all Travis' songs are collected: when the song's been written and why (about what, which influence (bout wtry f.i. : about gf/and "wonderwall" etc.)

But now something totally different:

The song "slide show" performed 5/10/99 Barrowland

Fran told some things bout the song and in they had a real slide show in the back whilst playing "slide show". ( a picture f.i. which showed Dougie and Fran when they first met...)
Measured by the applause and screams of the crowd it must have been incredible.
Do any pics or videos exist from that song of that special night?

cheers

We spoke of this in my 'The Man Who' thread. ;)

Writing To Reach You, The Fear, As You Are, She's So Strange, Turn, Safe were all, apparently, written before Good Feeling was released. I don't think Flowers In The Window was. I think it was written in 1998. :)

It would be great if Fran could one day give us more of a back story behind the songs. That would be great. He's already great at that and we know so much already. :)

It's so amazing cause all of these songs sounds more "mature", hard for me to imagine them on Good Feeling ;)
I think Safe fits in perfectly with the rest of the tracks on TIB, for me it feels like it was written only for that album, same thing with Writing To Reach You and the other tracks of course...

Back to the topic, that slideshow thing sounds interesting Nora, hope someone has any footage of it :)

@Ben, you're right, wow, you're like an open Travis encyclopedia...

I can add only this: Flowers in the Window was supposed to be the first single from The Man Who...Fran wrote it while they were recording TMW in 1998. 'It was written by the most eloquent, romantic fucker you've ever met. And that's not me', said Fran. It didn't fit there, even though it had been previewed live before the album's release. In 2000 they played the song and then decided to record it for TIB...

@Alex, I agree, I could've never guess they were written around the same time...
And that slide show sounds fantastic, hope somebody finds a recording of some kind :)

They actually recorded it a number of times i believe but were never happy with the final recording. Which i believe is still the case today. What with them always playing it in a busk fashion, and not as a full band performance.

The band have said the main reason for them not appearing on Good Feeling was that the songs were a lot more complex and they weren't good enough at the time they recorded Good Feeling to record the songs. When they came to record The Man Who, they'd played another 100 or so gigs, and they felt they were more able in recording those songs.

And still they release it as a single, funny guys :P Well Fran doesn't like Coming Around so I guess it all makes sense! ;)

The record company chooses what is released as a single. I'm sure that's how it ended up on the album. Fran wanted to release Sailing Away as a single.
