heehee - that definitely sounds like something he would say. Seriously, I really wanted to go throughout Denmark, all the way up to Skagen. I know it sounds bizarre, but over the years, I've built a collection of antique Danish oil paintings. Just ask Harry - for a while there, it was like a bad drug habit I had. First, I started collecting on Ebay. After a while, Ebay wasn't enough, so I started dealing directly with auction houses in Denmark like Lauritz and Bruun Rasmussen. I've finally broken my habit, but I'd still like to see Denmark (although I suppose that this could set me back on the progress I've made!)
So you know the work of the 'Skagen painters' like Krøyer and Ancher? They've got the most incredible light in their paintings. I've never before heard of someone being addicted to oil paintings, but if it contributes to spreading the knowledge of Danish art, then be my guest lol.
If you do come over, you should go see some Danish Design. Sounds like you'd appreciate it :o)

Yeah - I have a couple of Skagen paintings from Nyboe (not sure if he is one of the well-known painters from that area or not, but I like his stuff and you're right about the lighting - the ocean at Skagen must be beautiful). I was rooting around to see if I happened to have a photo of one of my Skagen paintings - I found this photo from Thanksgiving 2005 with one of the paintings in the background. Most of my Danish paintings are landscapes, although my favorite is an interior from an unknown artist. Otherwise, my favorites are painted by an artist named Albert Wang. The name doesn't sound Danish, but apparently, he was a professor of art in Denmark back in the late 1800s - early 1900s and he exhibited regularly at Charlottenborg. OK - I think I need to stop now before I'm tempted to log onto the Bruun Rasmussen web site & browse. I'm such a geek.

Bridget, I love that painting of the sea! Do you know the proper title of the painting at all? |

Thanks, peewee! The painting simply lists "Skagen" next to the artist's signature. Skagen is a town at the northern tip of Denmark, and the unique lighting and seascape in the area draws lots of artists. Not that I've ever been there or anything!!! But I'd love to see it someday. |

Skagen is such a lovely village, albeit a tourist village. It's dead in the winter cos more and more people only stay there for the summer now. Anyhow, it's worth visiting, especially cos the Kattegat and the North Sea collide at the tip of Skagen. You can actually see the waves of the two seas meet. I haven't been there in ages but it's lovely.
And don't buy more paintings, you can buy posters of them ;o) |
