Is that like, "I have to make pee-pee?" Ever since I started coming to the board, my daughter has been asking me to ask people how to say that phrase in different languages. She's been a little disappointed that "pee-pee" seems to be pronounced the same the world over. I think it's convenient, myself!

Pipi sauber machen means to clean up pee-pee...like changing diapers ;)

Ah, I see. I still have one in that stage. So, to add to our collection of pee-pee phrases around the world, how do you say, "I have to go pee-pee" in German? I can say it in English (obviously), French, and Spanish so far!

that would be "ich muss pipi (kiddie-language only of course) or just "ich muss mal!" does it too......or to quote my nearly three year old nephew: "ich muss PULLERN!!" lol

Two languages in which it's not called pee-pee:
Bengali - hishi(pronounced he she like in English)
Hindi - sussu

Parents in most of India take children to the bathroom and make a sound that goes "Shhhh" when they want the kid to pee :s Disturbing, but it works!

Thanks Trixi and La Femme, my daughter will be delighted to learn new pee-pee words when she gets home from school today! (The things that amuse a 7-year-old!)

I've heard about that method of potty training in India. Some don't use diapers at all, right?

the Finnish pee werb is pissata
"Minun täytyy pissata" tai Minun täytyy mennä pissalle"
pronounciation is as it's written. this kiddy vocab has always been sort of funny for my English hubby.

And I'm not taking the piss…

Nope. Middle class families nowadays use cloth nappies though and people who are well off use diapers(for the babies in case I'm not clear). I was lucky enough to get diapers, my brother had to make do with a chair that had a hole in the seat with a bucket under it :D

Ha ha! No offense, but I don't think I'm going to teach my daughter to say "pissata!" We'll just keep that one a secret. ;o) But as as word nerd, it is interesting to see where some of our slang words come from. I love finding out how words are related in so many different languages.
