Oh ManZ. I don't know anEonye on this bored whoz spellz thingz wroNg.

I think the spelling thing has a lot to do with Spell Check as well. It's a great tool, especially in my line of work, but if you rely on it too much, you'll start forgetting how to spell certain words.

I always have trouble with the word "available" for some reason! :P I spell it "avalible" and spell check automatically corrects it for me.

another good point, I think spellcheck is a good tool, but I wish it would point out my mistakes rather than just correcting them as I type, How do you know you're doing something wrong if someone corrects you without telling you.

It still doesn't help the people who can't sort out their homophones.

I think you can turn auto-correct off. You can in Microsoft Word at least.

I agree that it's a bigger problem that will only get worse if it's creeping into kid's assignments vs. Ric's abysmal spelling habits on the board.

I just wanted to get a dig in. ; )

But it isn't just kids, like my example of a cover letter from an adult (who judging from his education and experience was 30+) and doesn't have the excuse of that's how he grew up.

Nikki, I have a mental block about available too. (Wow, I just spelled it right!)

I don't like when spellcheck autocorrects things for me because with some words (like available!) it would be good for me to see my error so perhaps it would get through my thick skull.

The no-capital-letter thing that is going around these days drives me nuts. Shift! It's not that hard!

I was very against emoticons for a while. My thought was that one should be able to express oneself clearly enough that :o) would be unnecessary. I've changed my feelings a bit, realizing that a well-placed wink ;o) can sometimes be the difference between someone having a laugh and being offended.

The thought of someone using LOL on a resume or in an essay just makes me want to set my hair on fire.

Can I argue the case for the defence? The English language, blessed as it is, is a fluid beast. Rules are constantly being broken and rewritten. How the language is now isn't how the language will be in the next century. Who's to say 'LOL' isn't as poetic as shakespeare? Perhaps Shakespeare may have enjoyed 'teh LOLzers', I don't know.

I'm sure I've made hundreds of gramatical and spelling errors here anyway!

I'll say it. LOL isn't as poetic as Shakespeare. Capital "S" Shakespeare.

I understand your point, Moray. The English language is constantly evolving and new words are forming, but I still think that until a word is accepted by all and added to the dictionary, you shouldn't use it in formal writing.
