Out of the current crop of comedians, I'm a big fan of:

Al Murray
Jimmy Carr
Eddie Izzard
Lee Evans
Stuart Lee

oh and if we're talking old school, then it has to be Tommy Cooper. All the way. He's absolutely amazing.

I rate Stewart Lee and Jimmy Carr. The Stewart Lee site has links to every episode of 'TMWRNJ' (if anyone remembers that from Sunday mornings).

The currrrious orrrraaanggee!

I saw Stuart Lee live in Aberdeen a year or so ago. It was just after he'd been near bankrupted by the protest groups picketing against his "Jerry Springer: The Opera" for being blasphemous. And I've never seen a more scathing yet hilarious stand up show ever!

He had a 20 minute setup for a joke about "Vomiting into the upturned gaping anus of christ in a toilet", where the punchline was "Yes you can tell that story, but only if you use it in context".

Saw Richard Herring as well last year. That wasn't so much funny as tragic, as I watched an overweight 40 something coming to terms with his failing career to a half empty audience.

Lee and Herring worked very well together as a duo, but you're right. I think Mr Herring's career high-point ended about eight years ago. How come the picketers made Stewart Lee bankrupt? Doesn't artistic license hold up in a court of law or something?
