They roast/burn the hops and barley during fermentation that's what gives it the dark colour, It tastes very different from Lagers/Ales as it is what is known as a Stout ,also known as Porter or Plain. There are other brands Beamish, Kilkenny, Murphy's as well as varieties like Chocolate Stout and Oyster Stout but Guinness is the most well known. It has a creamy taste as well as a slightly burnt taste and is very heavy (filling), not to everyone's liking. The saying goes if you can finish your first pint of Guinness you'll become a Guinness drinker if not you'll probably never touch it again. Sort of Love it or Hate it, kinda like Marmite. I would seriously recommend you try it, Get a Half Pint (known as a glass) and if it's too strong or heavy for you ask for a drop of Blackcurrant cordial in it. Hope this helps explain it a bit.

My husband and his brother went to Ireland way back when and they did a tour of the Guinness factory. At the end they give you two tokens to "buy" two pints with in a pub that is at the end of the tour.
They met some guy there (60+) who was very friendly. He sat with them while they had their drink. While they both like Guinness (my husband especially) one was enough so they ended up giving their leftover tokens to the guy.
When they were leaving they saw him approaching other people. They figured out he probably sits in the pubs all day and gets the leftover tokens from lightweight drinkers like my husband. Love it!
haha, that guy is my hero!
I did the same guiness factory tour with my family. I was so rubbish I drank 1/4 a pint of my guiness and had to give it to my mum to drink for me. How non-manly is that?!

Oh yeah, and did anyone else catch Gwyneth Paltrow drinking Guinness o Friday Night With Jonathan Ross? Who'd have thought a woman drinking th black stuff could be so sexy? :-D
