Firstly, it's not the "Iranian people" its the "Islamic govt" please learn to separate the two, and if you can't dont go making statements like that that is a slap in the face of 70 million people. Iranian people have not started war, it is the fundemenalist govt that is corrupt and so extreme. And those religious people, I can personally say there are some but NOT as much of them as the mainstream media makes it to be. I have lived in Iran, in the schools, in Tehran, so I can actually say this. Have you? Have you lived in Iran? OR are you just saying this from what you've heard on your right-wing media?!

OK I apologise for not seperating the two but have you not just made the same assumption by stating "Right Wing Media" How do you know which papers or TV I read/watch.

btw the reason I used "A Nation gets the Govenment it Deserves" is that it is a direct quote, I can't remember by whom, I think it was originally used as a positive slogan in America but in 70's Scotland a Nationalist turned it around to mean the opposite.

Please do not think I do not want Iran to have democracy and for the majority to control the country but as has already been stated on here as it's first and foremost an Islamic Republic I find it extremely difficult to see that happening. But Best of Luck!!

Nora:
www.heute.de (the News programme from German tv Channel ZDF) offers a great summary of what has happened in Iran since the Revolution. With videos, interviews and reports on recent developments - all nice and short and very easy to understand for "non-political-scientists" :)

You can find the page with all Iran-related reports etc here
the videos and interviews really help when you don't have too much time.

Juli, wow, I'm impressed by your choice of topic!!
I wrote a paper on the Iranian elections in 2004, but it's in German. Maybe you let me read your paper one day? (it'd be a real test for my Spanish, but I'd be very interested in reading it)

As I'm no expert on the subject, I found this quite interesting:

Deutsche Welle - "Civil Rights - Quadriga: discussion on Iran" (June 19th)

Direct link to Video "Unrest in Iran: the end of Ahmadinejad's Presidency?"

Don't worry about it, life would be very boring if everyone agreed on the same stuff.

Just for the record, I don't think that just because it's islamic, Iran's republic can't be democratic. Islam doesn't necessarily mean totalitarianism. History has shown that Islam can be peaceful or violent, democratic or not, depending on the social and political context and the way it's interpreted.

Well, it wasn't really my choice :oP. It's an assignement for this sociology of the middle east class I'm taking. I'm very interested in the subject anyway, and the class is fascinating. But still my paper sucks, so I don't think I'll show it to you, unless it miraculously turns out to be decent :oP.

I've got to write another paper for this class, and I get to choose the topic. One of the options I'm considering is to analyze the present situation in Iran. But we'll see. I'm also interested in doing something related to the arab-israeli conflict.

(Sorry for this digression).

Just saw the video of Neda dying. That is the worst thing I've ever seen. I don't even know what to say...this whole thing is just heartbreaking and horrible.
