Most everyone has had the, shall we say, "romantic?" idea of committing suicide, but very few people actually follow through with the idea. You may think you want to be dead, but you don't REALLY want to be dead.
Yep. I agree, K-Dawg. But why can't you believe you're joining in? *ahem* ...I find that very insulting! :P
Ok! Listen to Chinese Blues now with this new idea that J. Smith was having suicidal thoughts, but his death was accidental.
“It’s the gun in your back, it’s the heart attack, it’s the way you look back before you step out in time to see the number of the bus that’s running you down” – Fran told us this was an important line. A gun in your back and a heart attack- those aren’t things you can control. Just as J. wasn't able to control his fate. Also, I now think that seeing the number of the bus that’s running you down is a metaphor for J.’s death. Death ran him down…it wasn’t self-inflicted, even though he may have wanted to kill himself.
When I listened to “Last Words” for the first time over the weekend something in the lyrics has been contradicting what we’ve been saying about it’s placement in the story line and it’s really confusing me.
If the girl (Sarah…or whoever she is) discovers J.’s last words before his death in a message on her phone, why does the lyric say “finding out in the nick of time”? What does she find out? Does she get the message before he kills himself? Or am I looking to deep into it? lol.
I've finally heard all the song now, but I'm still trying to work out my final order...
1st post in this thread, I've spent the weekend listening, forming opinions & reading what everyone else thinks.
I think you're bang on about her getting the message before he dies. IMHO the clue is in "Quite Free" in the line "He hides inside his padded cell"...to me this indicates he's been hospitalised, possibly for attemping suicide (even if the radio in the bath is an accident, like you say, he's still contemplated throwing himself out the window). So when he's sent to "hell" (earth) he's returned to his body, presumably because "she" has got the message and found him before it's too late!
Probably sounds like an utter mince theory, but hey! That's my opinion!

Ignoring the first line... *wink* I would have to say that maybe we should look again at the Romeo and Juliet idea... you know, maybe there was some kind of mixup, and she got his message at the wrong time, and it lead to a whole series of events that could have been avoided.
"The next song is about a man who dies accidentally by the radio falling in his bath. He goes to heaven, the angels tell him he's not welcome there, he has to go to hell. And as we all know, hell is earth and he ends up back on earth. This is called J. Smith"
Seems pretty clear, unless he was making it simpler for the German crowd?

i LOVE how Fran is giving tips outside the board cuz he knows at least some of us will see/hear/read it and pass along the info!!
OH and THANK you for the link!
I know!! Fran is probably getting so much entertainment out of this thread. I can just picture him sitting at his laptop with that hat on going "Muahahahaaaa!" :P
I don't know, but if it's possible that J. Smith could realize that he had to get uo to situation? And maybe J. Smith wouldn't be that negative, but become to a frustrated plan.
J. Smith had suicidal thoughts, but maybe is on J. Smith the part when he decided to change, to become a new man and he tells it "take a leaf from his book take a thread from his suit his a new man" maybe he was about to change everything in his life, and he even put the radio on the bath, to sing while the shower, maybe doing it for the first time, 'cause he's a new man, singing, changing. But then the accident happened, and his plan was frustrated, de died. He even said "and he prays to his god that he reps his reward for his new plan" maybe he has a plan and was no to kill him self.

I agree. He was just about to turn his life around and then WHAMO! It would also go along with the poem...I can't remember the exact words, but just when you grasp the poppy, it falls apart.
