I had a mild panic attack last night when I realised I'm graduating in 4 months and have absolutely no idea what I want to do, where I want to work and live. Life was much simpler after high school when I had this great, naive PLAN.
I don't feel I'm passionate about anything anymore. It sucks.

Meggy, I completely understand how you're feeling. I'm about to graduate too, I'm writing my last paper, which I'll probably hand in in less than two weeks... and that's it (well, they take a veeery long time to evaluate it, but there's nothing I can do about that).
I'm also in a research project and have tons of stuff to do. I have to get a paper done for a Congress. All this has to be done by tomorrow. And last week I broke down. I started to feel sick. I'm phisically and mentally overwhelmed. I went to the doctor and he gave me a muscle relaxant and an anxiolytic, lol.

I'm working at a place that doesn't have much to do with what I want to do for living (research), but considering the way things are right now, it's a good thing because it's stable... even though I haven't been paid in the last five months. Sure, I'm in a research project. This has everything to do with what I want to do in my life, but it's not like I can make a living out of it, it's ad honorem. So basically my life right now consists in studying and working my ass off for free.

I don't know what I'm going to do when uni is over. I'm clueless. I just think I'll try to take it easy, and take the opportunity to relax and do things that bring me joy, like singing, and I also decided I'm going to sign up for Italian lessons next week (even if I don't have enough money right now, I'll figure something out). This is something I've been wanting to do for a long time now.

So, after all my catharsis my advice is: try to relax and do things that you like. Not necessarily related to your career. If you can get a job at least remotely related to the things you like, you should consider yourself luckier than the vast majority of the world.

And then we'll meet in a few months and enjoy together our uni free lives with no plans for the future. :oP
*HUGS*

wow, maybe im just naive and idealistic enough (or stupid)to believe this, but I would never get a degree/take a job just for money. Money and vacation time are not enough to make a job you dislike worthwhile. Happiness is way more important. And you are never going to be 100% at any job, but to be in some field just because you knew you could make money would kill me.

Kayte, I have the same mascara/glasses problem.

Let me clarify a little. When it comes down to having enough money to have a home and support a family in the future, there are a lot of jobs that don't pay enough. I'm mainly thinking of creative type jobs. I know sooooo many people who were creative types (writing, art, music, whatever) who take jobs that are in "related" fields because it's as close as they can get to what they would really want to be (a writer, an artist, a musician) and they need money and security. They end up hating these jobs just as much as anyone else because they don't really have the creative freedom that made the job fun in the first place. They STILL don't make enough money and then they are still searching for their creative outlet and worrying about money to boot.

I would never take a job that I HATED just for the money. I would never be a construction worker or work on an assembly line. But I definitely would have followed a different educational path that would have led to a career that allowed me to "buy happiness" in my free time. If my fridge breaks down, I want to have enough money to buy a new one and still go on a vacation in the summer without having to worry. There's peace of mind in that.

If you can turn a passion in to a successful career, that's fabulous. I know a nurse who did that and loves her job a lot. Being a nurse was her childhood dream. But not everyone can do that and still have the OTHER dreams they want, too; a home, a family, and some little luxuries in life.

I just wanted to say good luck to Megg and Juli! I really hope you are able to find something that you both enjoy. Also, make sure you go to something fun and/or relaxing as soon as you graduate!

Tough decisions, but if it were me, the shopping would come first :-D

we booked a place to stay last night! We are renting out someones apartment for a few days. It looks really cool. It's in the hipster neighbourhood of Williamburg. We decided hipsters were pretty safe!

Shopping kinda comes first. because I was just there in Oct, this will be completely random and spur of the moment. Pass a gallery we want to go in, we will. Last minute broadway tickets? cool! Go with the flow, mazn.

But we did decide on Oreos and nuts and bolts are car snacks. important!

in other news, i have to spend the afternoon setting up a booth for my work (the theatre that I work for is doing Rocky Horror in a few weeks) at a trade show called Sexapalooza. This should be...interesting

For the people who don't know what to do with their lives:

I think most of us have heard this speech before, but it's always good to hear it again.

"Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know, at 22, what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't."

My life just got better- I've booked a flight to meet up with my bestest friend in Madrid. We haven't seen each other in months! YAY!
And also, I'm ready to eat chocolate, Anne ;).
