Yes, YES! Exactly. A friend of mine got every single one of her internships and her first job because her father had connections. She never actually had to apply properly. She's a lovely lovely person, but this and her "tipps" annoyed me to no end...
So sorry for you people! Annoying to get advice from people who get things on a tray.
I know I'm one of the lucky ones, and only because I'm older than you. When I graduated from the Graphic Designers' School we went to Japan to finish off (the course before us went to New York), all paid by companies who bought advertising space from our magazine. The next course, if I remember correctly, didn't get anywhere, as they were seriously hit by the recession (1992). That was close to the time I was unemployed for a while, but luckily got decent unemployment benefit for those few months. At least I managed to get a foot in before everything collapsed.
Maybe you should all train to be teachers, apparently there's always demand for them. Or nurses… Norwegians pay so well that all the Finnish nurses move abroad, some of them end up in England, too.
Both jobs are open for abuse, and not very well paid in general… Not very helpful, I know, you all really want something different from life.
In the mean time it's interesting to observe the building industry, here it's plenty of Estonians, who don't seem to like days off – always working on Saturdays or even Sundays. I believe they're cheaper than locals. |

I wouldnt want to teach anyways, but that is really not the case here. I know so many out of work teachers. They are lucky to get supply work, or like 1 or 2 day a week contracts and hope it leads to something full time. Everyone just keeps going back and getting more and more training hoping that it will put them a step ahead of everyone else. Nothing sadder than people with an undergrad, teachers degrees, masters and extra courses on top of that who work 1 day a week. |

Hahaha, I literally logged in while I was talking on skype with my mother who told me "I've always been telling you to become a teacher" (she is one). No, that's not an option for me, I am too impatient and kids annoy me greatly. |

There is a very positive side to teaching. I finished today for the summer break and don't go back until the 12th September woohoo!
I must admit that I consider myself very lucky not being a jobseeker in today's employment crisis. |

Unfortunately, teaching is its own course of studies over here, it takes 3 (primary school) or up to 5 years (usually you pick 2 or 3 subjects) and after that you have to do a 2-year traineeship thing and then you have to pass another bunch of exams and THEN it's up to the state to decide if and WHERE you get a job (most teachers are civil servants in Bavaria).
I wanted to become a teacher, originally, but I couldn't bring myself to study Maths as a second or third subject and it would've been necessary to make sure I'd get a job :| If I could start over, I'd probably study English and Maths and become a highschool teacher... |

| I keep thinking about going back to school for an actual skill . Something like visual merchandising. But I dont know that I want to delay life by 2 year for something that I don't know that I'd even be good at. |

Going back to education (even for something trivial or non job related) still looks good on a CV (resume), it shows that you have ambition, you set yourself goals and you can accomplish them. Most jobs these days are looking for a 3rd level education (degree), even if it's not relative to the actual position offered.
