The Day Travis Became My Favorite Band

I found out that Travis were coming to Darien Lake, which is a park that I had gone to all my life. Things worked out for me, and 4 days before the show, I was able to get 2nd row tickets, on Dougie's side. I loved the songs, but wasn't sure what they'd be like live...

I first laid eyes on Andy when he came on stage during Emiliana Torrini. I was impressed by his style. He came out in a lovely Superman shirt, which I assumed he'd bought there, because of the Superman Rollercoaster that's at the park. He strapped on his guitar, and had a cigarette hanging from his lips. And he rocked. I was incredibly happy to have had that time to see him, because I think it really began shaping my admiration for his guitar playing. His style on stage with Travis, so raw, so full of energy, in a different state... It was perfect.

When Travis came out for their set, I was shaking with anticipation. I had been in the park all day, braving the teenagers, riding the coasters, eating all kinds of things that were bad for me. All for this. They launched into "Sing" and then went straight into "Writing to Reach You". I couldn't believe how amazing the sound was. I was floored. I didn't know how their music would come across live, and with the first 2 songs, they had me in their corner. Because you can tell so much about a band from an album... You can tell so much about a band from a live gig... But sometimes, one is better than the other... With Travis, you get perfection on both levels. However, when they went into "As You Are" a song I loved but never paid a huge amount of attention to, I couldn't believe it. The song itself, starts so gently. Fran's almost crying vocals, the words... And then, as Andy launches into the solo, I just can't believe a song could be so perfect. But live, I felt like I was hearing it for the first time.

Fran talked to the crowd a lot, told stories about the songs, and really belted out those songs that I'd been holding in me. I was also startled by Dougie, who I assumed would be the quiet bass player. I was seated smack in between Dougie and Fran. Dougie, seems to me, is by nature, a flirt. He's got this incredible amount of sex appeal, and there were girls in the audience asking me all kinds of questions about him... (Presumably because I was standing when everyone was sitting, and because I was singing along when a lot of people didn't seem to know the band.) I had fun having what I like to call "eye sex" with Dougie. This consists of Dougie looking at you, right in the eye, then swaying his hips along with the beat of the music, giving you a HUGE and IRRESISTABLE smile, before looking away for a new eye-sexual partner. All this while playing the bass. I was totally astonished at how gorgeous this guy was. Photos of Dougie do NOT do him any justice at all.

I was also very interested in seeing Neil, though the way the stage was set up was quite hard. He also seems to sway to the music, but with his head, not his hips...

By the time the band finished the set, I had been blown away. I felt reborn, almost. A live band that also makes great records, and has such incredible personality on stage.

I ran out of there and got in line to ride Superman. My adrenaline flowing from the show, and being dropped 200 feet at a speed of 60MPH, well, a feeling I won't soon forget.
