Does anyone know how to sample stuff from Youtube Videos, I quite fancy using the first few seconds of this as a ring tone. I also quite fancy using some of my CD's but I want to know how to edit an mp3 file down to say the best 30 seconds, it's ok when it's something with a great intro... Seven Nation Army or Alternave Ulster but I sometimes want to sample the middle bits of songs.

Thanks in advance

You can use a programme called "audacity", which you can download here. It allows you to record and edit any sound played on your computer. My version can only save files in .wav format so you might need an mp3 converter. You should be able to so this with windows media player. (right click --> convert to).
And to rip your own cds, you can use a programme called EAC. Let me know if you need help with anything.

Yeah, Audacity's great and quite easy to use. To export as mp3s, you need to download lame_enc.dll from here and point Audacity towards it when it asks.

Also, you can save youtube to mp3 from this.

Thank you this is great!!

I'm probably being a bit thick here but how do you get the sound out of the Youtube video and into the audicity program??

Thanks

Normally you just need to play the You tube video and click the record button in the Audacity programme.

If you've got the audio as an mp3, use Project: Import audio to import it. If not, press the record button and it should record.

If it's not picking up anything, you need to change the settings for recording - Edit: Preferences: Recording then try all the different options you have in the Device drop-down. It can be hard to make it pick the right option though.

Sorry if I'm being patronising, but I'm trying to cover all the possibilities :)

You can use this if you're wanting to use a few seconds of an mp3.
