not cycling at my age!

My boss at my old job (which I quit on Saturday) just turned 60 and every day off he's out for a cycle and run first thing in the morning. I'm almost certain he was the fittest person in the department

So none of us have an excuse

No because you know when you need to go to Paris you could get one of those buses you mentioned to a more populated area and get onward public transport from there to Kings Cross.

I managed to get all round Europe, including Paris to Glasgow with nothing but a backpack and my legs so I fail to see how anyone else can't.

There are of course exceptions if a car is absolutely necessary for your job.

Why don't you want to stay in Paris overnight btw?

I was on my own and spoke bad French (which is probably worse)

Everybody I met in Paris was very friendly and spoke perfect English, after my failed attempts at French. I wouldn't have any hesitation in staying over if I was in your position if that helps at all.
