I was driving in the car with my husband, listening to J Smith and wondering if it's possible that the new album is slipping up the rankings to become my 2nd favorite Travis album, displacing The Invisible Band. So, my darling husband suggested a completely analytical approach to this non-analytical question. Obviously, an album will resonate differently at different times in my life and when I am in various states of mind, but it was a very fun exercise, and I was surprised by the results.

Here's what I did. I assigned a point value to each track on the album (I left off hidden tracks for simplicity). -1 for a song I don't like and usually skip, 0 for a song that I feel neutral about, 1 for a song I like, and 2 for a song I love. Then, I took the average, dividing the total point value by the number of tracks to get my very scientific result!

The Man Who: 16 total points, 1.6 average
J Smith: 13 points, 1.08 average
Good Feeling and The Invisible Band TIED, 12 points, 1.0 average
Boy With No Name, 11 points, .92 average
12 Memories, 8 points, .73 average

SO...congratulations J Smith to your impressive showing at Number 2. I'm looking forward to hearing tracks live in Boston and NYC!

Winner: The Invisible Band 1.6 (16p)
2nd place: The Man Who and Ode To J. Smith 1.5 (15p and 17p)
3rd place: 12 Memories 1.2 (12p)
4th place: The Boy With No Name and Good Feeling 1.0 (12p)

But points according to this ranking aren't really saying everything, it should be more specific ;)

Fun!
I'm considering hidden tracks (those that are on the editions I have).
Since not all the albums have the same number of tracks, I'm basing on the average to make the ranking.

1. The Man Who & Ode To J. Smith - 1.55 average / 17 points
2. 12 Memories - 1.50 average / 18 points
3. The Boy With No Name - 1.31 average / 17 points
4. The Invisible Band - 1.17 average / 14 points
5. Good Feeling - 1.08 average / 13 points

it's interesting how change the results if you include hidden tracks :D

My results:

1. The man who ................(15/11) = 1,36
2. Ode to J Smith..............(16/12) = 1,33
3. The invisible band..........(17/14) = 1,21
4. The boy with no name .......(18/15) = 1,2
5. Good feeling / 12 memories..(10/10) = 1

(I'm surprised, I didn't think "Ode" could be in second place with this mathematical rating :D)

The order in which i'd put them in is mostly quite solid. Good Feeling definitely at the bottom. The Invisible Band and The Man Who in 1st and 2nd place. But 12 Memories, Ode To J Smith and TBWNN can move around a bit. I think it's because none are perfect albums and i can personally find faults in all of them for different reasons. Though i still love all 3 of them. :)
