Another great song using the Travis speciality of lively tune and sad lyrics. Actually, sad doesn't cover it, have a look at the lyrics below. Poor guy, he must have told a lot of lies when he was 17 :P

Download it now from 7digital, Amazon or probably iTunes though iTunes doesn't work for me, or wait until tomorrow...

The Ballad of J. Smith
He watched the shadows
On the walls of his room
And the silence will speak too soon
And he held her tightly
So tight he could tell
He knew the feeling so well

He said "Pretty baby will you marry me?"
She said "You'd look shit upon my family tree"
And that's when he realised he'd have to start again
And just when you think you've got it figured out
They light seven candles and you're blowing them out
You know that you're going to have to light them all again

You see her turning night into day
And the broken television display
And I know you're hurting
But tonight I can pray
Cos you've got to think for yourself

Lie down everyone
Close your eyes and look for the sun
Even they don't know where it's gone
Reminiscing of days when you knew that you belong

He said "Pretty baby will you marry me?"
She said "You'd look shit upon my family tree"
And that's when he realised he'd have to start again
And just when you think you've got it figured out
They light seven candles and you're blowing them out
You know that you're going to have to light them all again

You're a gods gift James, thank you! I'm gonna buy the single now, hope Ballad of J. Smith is included on the Swedish release, cause I only know how to do it from Swedish shops :P

Lie down everyone
Close your eyes and look for the sun
Even they don't know where it's gone
Reminiscing of days when you knew that you belong

It's already one of my favourite Travis songs, should have been on the album!!!!!!

Thanks for that. I think this now means we can remove '7 Candles' from the list of 'mystery songs'. :)

I love it! Again, a BRILLIANT Ode To J Smith b-side. Certainly a top 15 b-side, probably top 10. The future is very exciting. :) More songs like this please guys! :) lol

From iTunes through my iPod Touch.

I think this is one of the best Travis songs ever.

Maybe I'm just having a crush on it, but it's a wonderful tune, goes well with Song To Self, I think!

As if anyone needed proof that this is a band completely revitalised, think you just have to listen to the 'Ode' b-sides. The difference in quality to the TBWNN era b-sides is amazing. Not that those were bad, it's just....

This, Used to Belong and Sarah aren't just great b-side songs, they're great songs full stop. Especially Used to Belong, which is near enough my favourite Travis song of the last 8 years or so.

I still think TBWNN b-sides are really great, but yes, these Ode b-sides are brilliant! :)
